Cinco de Mayo Tablescape

After my love affair with Mexico was cemented when I visited in 2013, the love for everything Mexican has never dwindled. So as May 5th marks Cinco de Mayo, I thought this year I would go all out and create something for the blog. For those of you that don't know what 'Cinco de Mayo' is, it is Spanish for 'Fifth of May' and is marked to celebrate the victory over the French in the battle of Puebla. Basically, for all us non Mexican folk, it's a day to embrace the country and its culture. Bright celebrations, amazing food and a beautiful array of colour.

With everything on my site, I want to try and make it as relatable as possible. This tablescape is simple to recreate. You can mix up your colours, as long as they are nice and bright. Why not take a look at my Pinterest board for inspiration? I've used a mixture of sunflowers, wild flowers and some pink azalea picked from my garden. But you could use succulents, pop them in to some old tin cans and paint them nice bright colours?

I made my pinata style napkin rings from toilet roll holders, simply cut in two. Then I used sheets of coloured crepe paper, cut to size. Cut diagonal lines three quarters of the way up to make a fringe and then stuck it down with glue. Super simple but really effective. My napkins cost me just over a £1 from eBay and they had so many different colours. Plates, placemats, cutlery and glasses all from Ikea.

My cutlery holders are simply strips of the brown paper from my flowers, cut and folded over at the bottom to create a little pocket. Then I added a few flowers and wrote people's names on the fold. I always like to re-use the flower paper if it's not wet, brown paper is so versatile. My tablecloth is a remnant of fabric I got for my food styling, you can buy bags of them on eBay for next to nothing. Then I simply added a few mini bottles of tequila that I've had for a while. Well, you can't have a Mexican tablescape without a little tequila.
